I have the four wires. Right now the neutral and ground are connected together.
I will check to make sure the neutral is connected correctly in the circuit box though.

Are the Red, black and White 6ga? Green can be 6 or 8ga.

Neutral and ground should only be connected together at the main panel.

I am not sure of the wire size.
You are right that the white and ground should not be connected but that is how they connected a 3 prong outlet to a 4 wire cable.

Ground-Neutral bond should only be made at the main panel.
Of course if you swap on a NEMA 14-50 the neutral will be connected but not to the ground.

I may be wrong, but I think the GROUND wire (bare or green) can even be 10g, per the NEC. Of course, local codes may differ.

NEMA 14-50 has been ordered. Now to find some wire. I try and buy local when I can. Nobody had 50 amp rv outlet. One hardware store had never even heard of it.

Home Depot has them - that's where I got the last one.
Or Amazon.

Its a NEMA 14-50 which is a standard receptacle and plug for electric ranges. Home Depot and Lowes and Menards all day long. Asking for the "RV outlet" is where you went wrong.

So the receptacle and how it's wired is the difference between RV friendly 50 amp 2 leg 110 and whatever RVers plug into that fries all the ac things in their unit?
I have an electrician friend that did mine when we installed the whole house generator but I see a lot of do it yourself stuff done in the neighborhood without permits or inspections. Including a back feed outlet with no transfer switch on our house when we bought it.
