When I played in the 50's and 60's....you were not allowed to enter the key until AFTER the free throw shooter HAD RELEASED THE BALL.

Now, I see players disregarding the rule and refs do not call this out...except one time a game and I can go months before seeing another call of this type.

Am I an old, outdated fuddy-duddy who wants to see players stick to the rules (even tho no one plays by the rules anyway, sports or otherwise)

Don't get me started on walking, travelling or steps whilst going in for a layup.....

Apparently, the rules need to be enforced per the TV executives' requirements:
• Keep the game moving
• Keep the scores HIGH
• Keep the advertisers happy
• Stay within the designated time allotment

I literally searched the meaning of "travelling in basketball" on the internet a couple days ago!

Rules change over the years. Apparently now the players are allowed a "gather" step if they are in motion when catching a pass (time to gather the ball securely, I guess) and then the two steps up to a layup.

Are you talking Pro Basketball? If so, there are no rules. Have given this "sport" up as it does not resemble the basketball I played and coached. I do believe that long ago the rule referring to free throws is that you could not enter the key until the ball hit the rim or backboard. They changed it to after it leaves the shooter's hand.
Charging is also a good one. This has changed from year to year. It has become an emphasis at times and everyone was getting called. It depends on who is playing it seems.

I still love to watch college basketball. With the new ruling that players will now be paid for their participation in advertising and money raising programs for colleges, it might start to look like the pros. While I am in favor of fairness and pay to athletes, how they are going to do this is the big question of the day. Stay tuned. This might be just another example of the big schools reaping benefits not available to the smaller schools. The rich will get richer.

aka Pedro. Here is the rule. If you are talking about what the pros do, you are correct. Rules to these guys are simply "suggestions".

The free thrower or any player beyond the three-point arc may not enter the free-throw lane until the ball touches the ring or backboard. However, all players who are lined up in marked lane spaces may enter the key/lane once the free thrower releases the ball.
