Went fishing at Newport Pier.

I was here 3 years ago that on advice of a friend, to go there at 7am to have a choice of parking.

But dang, most likely with the announcement of the opening up by the governor, it's 7am and there are no more parking available.

Did my shoreline biking my around midday and the bike lane/jogging path were jammed.

Surprisingly, there is still high level of masking around even on open spaces. The state's citizens must have resolved to further bring down Covid cases and deaths on the state.

A decidedly nonpolitical comment...
There is a lot of issues being balanced. Let me present just one.

U.S. Customs allows Mexican citizens who are classified Permanent Residents, AKA Green Card holders to cross the border and work in the USA.
The total percentage of people fully vaccinated is around 25%
The reason is the elderly came first and they are not among the Green Card working class.

Both Mexico and the USA are doing everything they can to get everyone fully jabbed but it's going to take another month or two. There are no anti vaxxers down here so that is not an issue.
But California's percentage of fully vaccinated hovers around 50%

So for partially unvaccinated antibodies perhaps a bit of extra caution would not hurt. Crossing the border all need an approved mask. The stores down here require masking for entry.

I'm all for keeping everyone healthy and happy.

The Reason the Elderly came first in, as far as I know, All states is because they are more at risk. They no longer have the youthful immune systems or ability to "Bounce back" and are far more likely to die from ______ (Fill in the disease of your choice) than someone 50 years younger... (Reason why I got a couple vaccines I really don't think I need no I'm not talking about COVID, One of them I had in 1985 and bounced back, Don't want it again).

The reason you still see a lot of masks is Intelligence.. Though in Michigan Masks are no longer required. I'll keep masking. Sadly those around me. not so much as I'm seeing perhaps 10% or less And yes I'm fully vaccinated.

Vaccine + Mask... Belt + Suspenders.. Same concept.

Me and the DW escaped seasonal colds, flu and allergies with masking.

Will continue masking like the ultra-sanitary and overly courteous (they put on mask when they have colds but need to go out) Japanese, lol.

Science, statistics and risk assessment would beg to differ.

You should cite them you know.

So far, numbers are showing high cases of Covid and deaths are in low mask compliance states.

And, too, states with low educational attainments of their citizens.

Since this is around the campfire, let's do it around the campfire style. The source is Google and a calculator.

Rough numbers US population 331M, covid cases 33.5M roughly 10%, deaths 602K roughly 2% of cases, .2% of population. California, since that is the most intelligent, most locked down state, 39.7M population, 3.81M cases roughly 10%, 63k deaths 2%, .2% of population.

With the lockdown and intelligence of CA, it should be orders of magnitude better than the US as a whole.

IQ's varies from city to city. but an area with a very high IQ can skew the state. And an area with low likewisew. CA has both. It also has one of the "Ground Zero" points in the country for COVID distribution and thus raked up a lot of deaths. I'd have to study more charts than I care to to find out how significant that is. (It's a military base where we (YES THE US Government) Actually imported COVID-19 in case you are wondering)

TO give you an example of the "Spread" The county I'm in is below 50% fully vaccinated. (Myself among them) The state over 60%.

The original poster was in a High IQ area. sadly there are many Q areas in the state (What you get when you lose half your IQ the punster says elsewhere. Not to be confused with John DeLancy (Q of Star Trek TNG).

Oh. Michigan the mask mandates and capacity limits ended... TODAY.

Last I checked (sunday) the mob run eatery near me was still "Temporarily closed" and no I'm not going to name it.

The number of cases simply doesn't matter very much any more. Hospitals are no longer challenged and I have heard no predictions of hospital overcrowding in a long time.

What matters is deaths per capita. There is no recovery from death. The states with the highest covid death rates are:

New Jersey
New York
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
Mississippi
Arizona
Connecticut
Alabama
Louisiana
South Dakota
Pennsylvania
Michigan
New Mexico
Indiana
Illinois

That's the worst 15 states for deaths per capita.

Line up your silly made up high and low IQ statistics with that data.

Unfortunately it seems like younger adults are now at increased risk of serious complications from mutant COVID-19 strains. The uncertainty of possible further mutation of the virus should make complacency unwise. I will continue to avoid high density enclosed areas. It's an individual decision that should not register on any impact scale.
