What's everyone opinion on mud flaps? We domicile in SD, and as far as I can tell they are not required there.
The boxes behind the tires seem like they'll do a pretty good job of keeping debris from flying up and hitting anything.
I saved the heavy RAM flaps from the old truck to put on this one, but might not bother. Here they are on the old truck:

I would put them on. Worse case they are only a bit of time to put on. Who knows how much they will keep off salt/deicer from the rest of the truck or whatever you are towing.

I think trucks should have them.
The only problem with having them directly behind the tires as shown in the picture is that they can be pulled off if you try to back over something tall enough that they get caught between that “something” and the tires. Not common, but it happens.

That's why I was thinking about not installing them. I've never actually had that happen, though. It might be interesting to put them behind the boxes.

Uh… I have. ![embarrassed [emoticon]](http://www.rv.net/sharedcontent/cfb/images/embarrassed.gif)
I didn’t want to admit it, but I did it once.

Without them you will probably sandblast the finish off the tool box . They will also help protect anything you tow . I use them front and rear of the rear tires .

Haven't got to the mudflaps yet, maybe tomorrow when I'm working on the tow hooks. The Ranch Hand for a 3500 fits the 5500 fine, but the tow hooks don't clear so I ordered the ones for a 3500. I did get the wheels and tires on and drove about 70mi with them -- they handle and feel much more like the factory ones than I expected.

Just to put a quick before/after together on the wheels and tires:

With flaps, they also lower mpg. Not to measurable degree, but they do.
I never had them driving on West Coast. Even I don't look for gravel roads, I happen to land on them from time to time, including about 30 miles gravel road shortcut in BC.
My 2017 Ford had clear film applied behind the wheels, what protected the paint.
At one time in the past I had to accelerate hard with cargo trailer to merge from gravel pull-out area into highway traffic.
The gravel was flying quite high and the cheap diamond plate on trailer show quite some beating, but Ford's bed did not show any chip.
