I am looking to buy an older front living fifth wheel and I would like to have some suggestions. I have a 2007 2500 LBJ diesel truck so I can pull up to 14000 lbs total weight.
Thanks for your help.

The problem with older trucks, especially the 2500, is the payload rating. Trucks of that era do not have nearly the payload rating of newer trucks. You may have an issue with pin weight of a larger 5er.

Estimate the loaded pin weight of the trailer at 20% of the trailers GVWR, not dry weight. As noted, watch your rear axle weight rating which will be reached long before the 14,000# trailer limit. A 14,000# 5er will have a loaded pin weight of about 2800#. The truck has to have sufficient capacity to carry that plus passengers, cargo in the truck as well as a hitch.

We have a 2015 Montana 3750FL and we love it, but it has 5 slides and weighs over 16,000 lbs.

I just upgraded from an 03 F250 to a 21 GMC 3500 simply because the 03 did not have the payload to carry the 5th wheel we wanted. From what I have found most FL units are going to be on the larger size. Having the separate room adds length as opposed to having the living and kitchen combined into one large area. I just bought a Durango Gold 387FL by KZ. Its GVWR is just over 16K Currently I am within my cargo capacity but if I maxed out the trailer my truck would be over.

fill your gas tank, find a scale and weigh your front and rear axels, then look at the decal and see what your max rear axel weight is and do the math and that will tell you the pin weight you can handle make sure you allow of who ever else goes with you and the weight of your 5th wheel hitch also. then when looking at 5th wheels look at the specks on the pin weight and add 500 lbs, that will get you in the ball park, but I can pretty much guarentee you a 2007 3/4 tone will be overloaded with a 14000 lb 5th wheel.

Good answer to the OPs question! These were better than average build quality, and seem to retain value.
The OP was not asking about his truck, which is also good quality in the model year he has.

Jerry, while the OP's truck may be good quality, it doesn't change the fact that FL FWs are going to be heavier than what a 2500, even a 2022 model, can CARRY. I seriously doubt you're going to find a FL < 14k GVW, so 2800 lbs pin wt, =minimum=, and most probably 3-4k pin wt over all models.
