My vehicles don't have any of the driver assistants people are talking about now. I bought a GPS that has lane departure option. I was playing with it 1 day while spouse was driving the pickup. Couple days later, headed up the highway with a permit load, discovered I had not turned that feature off. Very irritating, until first stop, she did not understand I had escort to be sure I could use the part of road I needed. BUT that night, sleeping in a rest area, I wished the people driving by braille had rumble strips they could hear without me also hearing.

Super Cruise only works on completely digitized roads. Most of the digitized roads are Interstates and some state limited-access highways. (It doesn't have to worry about pedestrians.)

I think it's a step towards fully self-driving (where one doesn't have to pay attention). These things take time.

While it is "hands free" the online info indicates the onboard camera also pays attention to the driver and pretty much checks to see if you are paying attention to the road. if it looks like you get warnings, followed by the vehicle slowing down,
Reading the description it's more like an extension of active cruise control on vehicles coupled with lane keeping assist.
and then lidar and other info to keep track of the roadway.

That’s pretty much it. The Tesla system is different but provides similar level 2 facility. Unlike the GM super cruise though, it is a hands on system. If your hands are off the wheel too long (20 to 40 seconds) you get warnings and eventually it will assume your incapacitated, bring the vehicle to a stop and turn on the hazards. If you violate the rules too many times it locks you out of the autopilot system until you stop the vehicle and exit the vehicle. The tesla system uses visual instead of radar and lidar. Pros and cons to that. The pro is that it works anywhere on most roads, or at least the ones with lines. It recognizes bikes and pedestrians. It can not be used in construction zones etc. Different manufacturers have different approaches. Supercruise definitely seems pretty cool as well.

I saw the commercial also. Granted it was the 1500 models not the HD but I'm sure that's coming. We all have are different opinions on automated driving and our own reasons why we feel that way but let's face it...the day is coming when all we do is ride. Like it or not. I'm not saying I'm a fan but there was a time when folks hated power windows and now you can't buy a car made without them. Its a change that's coming. Sure it will have its faults as the technology is improved and mastered but it's here and only growing.

There's a point in life when one has to put down the keys... I'm (hopefully) quite far from that point, still being solidly middle-aged with kids in high school, but would really like to be able to maintain independence a little longer once I do reach that point, and see self-driving cars as a means to that. I hope they get there.

Last time I had the daily driver at the dealer for a multi-day repair, the loaner they gave me to drive had lane assist. A far cry from hands-free, but a step in that direction. Noting the fight it put up the first time I changed lanes without signaling (hey, there was nobody else in sight in either direction, and I just wanted to turn left), I worried what would happen in an emergency, like what if a tree jumped out in front of me? Or more likely, a kid chasing a ball, or there’s an accident ahead?
They may be right that self-driving will reduce accidents, but it isn’t there yet IMHO.

I Agree One Hundred Percent. I love driving and sometimes do it just for fun.
I've heard that in a few years Auto Braking will be required by law. Maybe that's OK but, I don't know how that works and I wonder if it will be a pain in the butt sometimes ?? How far from stuff will it begin to apply the brakes and how hard ?
When passing cars on a two lane road you sometimes have to get kinda close to the vehicle in front of you. By using my senses I can decide when it is safe to do that. Will the auto braking system make it impossible to pass ??
Will the auto driving system stick exactly at the posted speed limit ?
There are 2 lane roads in my area that are lightly used and posted at 55. On a clear, dry, summer day, with no traffic, I can go down them safely at 60. Will auto driving allow me to do this ??
I have a lot of questions about these systems.
