Lack of education--do they teach spelling in school anymore?

Hardly the case on this forum, I'd guess the average age is over 50 here. And in my experience the more highly educated annd intelligent: hard science and engineering majors make up and use plenty of acronyms. You obviously do not associated with those folks. Physicists are notorious acronym coiners.
One of my favorites from the 1940's is the one for shutting down a nuclear reactor: SCRAM. That stands for SuperCritical Reactor Axe Man. I don't know if Fermi, one of the most intelligent men ever, coined it but it was for his reactor in Chicago. I looked it up and Fermi did coin it in a slightly different form.

I doubt there is anyone here who doesn’t use language shortcuts (abbreviations, acronyms, jargon, etc).

This whole thread I found both amazing and amusing.

I am massively dyslexic, and I also read very fast because. Should I hit something like you people are writing about, I just give up and go along and hope it is explained later.

Some common and familiar TLAs (Three Letter Abbreviations) get read, but many just slip by. I could list those that were common in my field, but they are related and never just "out of the blue".

Sometimes acronyms can be harmful when misinterpreted.

True story, one of my drivers was given 3 day off for a report of non working Air Conditioner in his truck,a long running problem we had on our OTR trucks.

He wrote " A/C NFG " The supervision wrote that this was foul language and would not be tolerated and 3 day with no pay was the punishment.

I immediately filed a grievance and won when I brought in the driver to explain that what he meant was No Freon Gas..........[emoticon] [emoticon]

I was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy. Everyone who served knows the military is big on acronyms.
The pilots would write up descrepancy reports on problems with the Jets.
One of the new pilots wrote up one, "The Fuel Transfer Switch does not work in the OFF position."
I had to pull him aside and explain it.
