I was new to the forum and was acronym ignorant. I created a post stating as such and asked for help. Someone posted a link to a list, 2 full pages, 10 point, single spaced. I keep a printed copy in a desk drawer for reference. Only 3 of 8 of NamMedevac's examples are on the list.

I agree with the original poster (OP). I feel that the acronym **** started with texting and continued with the group that can't spell. Facebook helped this phenomenon along. Ask a person to spell out AFAIK and see what you get. Another one is IMHO. It seems people are too lazy to use correct English to communicate so they use abbreviations that many find hard to understand. I can see the need for brevity when texting in traffic but you should wait for a gas station to text your worthless garbage. DW, cool, who really refers to their wife as Darling Wife, girlie men?.

In the distant dawn bandwidth was a large issue. Therefore to save money and time acronyms became "polite".

If I use one, then the first time I type it out in full. Within the same post, I then use the "short form".

I agree with larry. It's just laziness, or someone just trying to show how 'savvy' they are with the use of acronyms.

I shouldn't have to refer to any 'list' or 'Google it' to understand a plain English posting.

Just my opinion.

Question?

Had the amount of acronyms here even come close to the amount used and has been used for decades in the military?

It's really a matter of not staying current. Google is your friend if you miss something.
With that in mind,
Do I really need to type out Recreational Vehicle each and every time or is RV sufficient

The site is "RV.net". Is this not encouraging acronyms?

I guess you have no problem spelling out:

CEO
CFO
NASA
RSVP
PS
AWOL
NATO
NBA
NFL
NHL
EPA
AMA
ADA
CIA
FBI
CC
BCC
TSP
FT
YD
LB
VCR
CD
DVD
PO
LP
TV
SCUBA
SNAFU
SWAT
ZIP
ASAP
CSI
DMV
MIA
SCOTUS
POTUS
HMS
USA
US

And many many more.

P.S. oops, postscript: many of the "acronyms" you are complaining about aren't actually acronyms but initialisms - such as LMAO, DW, MIL...
