Carried one as long as I can remember. I am 72 (almost), and still do. I currently carry my Father's old small two blade folding knife, not sure what brand it is. It has to be 40 years old. I usually use it everyday for something.
My favorite was/is a single blade small Gerber Baby Lock, about 4" long unfolded.
Side note, the old Army pocketknife was made by Camillus (sp.), had one also and gave it to my grandson last year. I don't remember a number designation for it, also have a couple of P-38s, NOT designed to carry in pants pockets.....

redcatcher, you're right on not carrying the p-38 in your pocket. I probably learned the same way you did-experience. And it only took 1 lesson

Most of my 20s, and part of my 30s just open a can was a meal. P 38 lived on key ring. To make it safe for "pocket carry" we would put a slight bend in the hinge pin. This would mean you needed to hook pin on rim of can, use that to open the opener, before opening the can.

Dad gave me a small folding pocketknife for my birthday when I turned 6 and had two blades one was 1 1/2" and the other one was 1/2", I found real fast that the small blade inserted in the ignition of my dads 1948 Jeep would start the motor, my brother and I learnet to drive on the front yard that day, still carry one today and have several knives from Sweden "Mora" and one made by the Laps with a raindeer horn with a carving on the handle, still have my little knife.

Most of my younger life was on the water. A waterman is never without his knife. The only time I don't have an edge is when I don't have pants on. When I have to pack it to get on a airplane these days, I am uncomfortable until I can get it back out of my luggage.
I never realized how much other came to count on my having a knife until I bought in a company that I used to work for to do a special job for my then employer. While setting things up, one of the people that had been in my group back then turned to me and asked to borrow my knife. It had been 12 years since we worked together and he still expected that I would have a knife.....

I have carried a Victornox Executive since before 1965. So many screws have been tightened or unscrewed with them. Lord knows the number of boxes opened, fishing hooks tied, wood slivers extracted and the list goes on.
Gave my grandson a smaller one on his tenth birthday. Not sure he can carry it now days.

i have one of those 'swiss' army knifes, as we used to called them, and use it quite often. as a matter of fact i used it today. at church i used it to cut open a bag of salt. the kind of salt you put on ice. there was a patch of ice by the church door. Also use the scissor often. i also have one of those Leatherman tools with the pliers, knifes, file, screw drivers, etc.

I carry and have carried a pocket knife for years for utility purposes and I carry other knives for other purposes. At any time I'm outside the house, I always have at least 2 knives.

Have had dozens if not hundreds of pocket knives throughout the years. For the past 10+ years, except for the most executive of offices, I've carried either a Leatherman or Gerber equivalent...either a spring clip model or a belt version. Got tired of needing light duty pliers, screwdriver, etc while doing miscellaneous chores around the house, hangar, or shed and having to find that tool while also carrying a pocket knife. Older age has brought a strong dislike for anything beyond small amounts of change in my front pockets.

So, me, too. Since at least second grade. Still, to this day. And yes, I use it almost every day to open SOMETHING, cut some cord/rope/string, etc. I even get asked by strangers in the lumber yard to "borrow your knife for a second." That is an absolute no-no. NEVER lend your knife to a stranger. If they are too dumb to have come prepared, they are too dumb to return it intact. Last time I did that, it came back with the blade snapped off. Idiot tried to use it as a pry bar.
