Anybody got a low-buck DIY solution to keep rain/sleet/snow off the generator while it is running? One time I set a piece of plywood on top which sufficed for some heavy snow but that wouldn't do if there was any wind. Curious what quick and easy ideas others have used.

Why?
It won’t hurt the generator or at least it has t hurt the 100s or 1000s of generators I’ve used out in the weather.
This comes up once in a while and it’s a very fickle thought process. Just use your generator
Cover it when you’re not using it if you are choosing to leave it out in the elements indefinitely

The problem is the hot exhaust, I have turned a plastic storage tub over the gen but you cannot cover the exhaust. So the tub I use does not come all the way down to the ground, I suppose you could cut a piece off the tub to leave an exhaust port.
And I had a Honda 2.2K ruined because it got water inside.

I do not haul it there on the road but my small generator sits on a rack on the back bumper when I am using it. I bought a sheet of corrugated plastic sheet from home depot and folded it in half to form a "a" frame to sit over the generator and rack.

Maybe some of us value our equipment more and would like to keep them in good order for a much longer life?

To the OP, you could rig a tarp tent, just need a couple of sturdy up right poles that could be driven into the ground (two trees could be used if available), some rope and tent spikes and a cheap small tarp..

Run rope between the poles or trees, throw tarp over rope and spike down the ends of the tarp that hit the ground.. This leaves the entry and exit points of the rope open which allows air to flow through but keeps most of the rain and snow away from your gen..

Myself, I have a nice cover over my truck bed I can open up some which allows me to run the gen in the bed in any weather..
