Had a big long response, but I'll summarize.
It's subjective. I've seen MANY LS motors go MANY miles with less than stellar maintenance and I wouldn't lose sleep over a 5-6kmile oil change even if that was 18-24months intervals.
It's also less than $50 for 2 gallons of 15W40 and an oil filter, even at todays prices, which makes it pretty much a moot point cost wise. Annual maintenance that costs half of what going out to dinner and drinks on a Friday night costs...with a couple quarts leftover for the generator or lawnmower oil change.

Once a year I change the oil in my garage and Blackstone's reports have always been good job. chevman PS usually our truck is driven 6000miles per year.

I'm sure I change mine more than I have to but, oil changes are cheap.
I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Book calls for 5,000 miles. I change the Mobil 1 oil and filter at 10,000 miles regardless of time and that is about every three years right now.
207,000 miles and burns no more oil than when new. And yes I bought it new.

I think you can get away with every 3 years because you are in southern Cali.
You don't have to deal with cold wether statrs or condensation like the OP has in PA.
With full synthetic in a cold weather enviroment, I think you can go 6-7k or 1 year whichever come first.
Oil changes are cheap enough, no need to push the limit.

I don't think cold weather starts is an issue as long as the vehicle is put away hot.
And moisture is very minimal issue with the modern emissions sealed crankcase since the 1980s.
I am not speaking for diesels but they might be fine also.

well, the GM oil minder will go to 0% after 1 year, even if you don't move it. It drops 2%/wk.
And GM requires oil change at least every year (as does honda, acura and others) or when the oil minder says so.
so, if you want to maintain the warranty you will need to change it at least every 12 months.

I have 2005 Ford 3/4T 4X4 with a 6.0 diesel. I run Rotella T6 5-40W synthetic. I usually change around 10,000 miles. I've sent oil samples in twice through the local CAT dealer. Both times they came back with notes to run it another 5,000 miles.
I certainly wouldn't change synthetic at 3,000 or 5,000 miles.

OP here again... Loving the replies.
As to cold weather starts - doesn't happen. It's kept in a garage with no starts over the winter. I know folks will come in and say you have to start your engine every month or so to keep the seals moist or whatever... But - our 1984 Bronco also has never been started in the winter and so far so good.
Thanks for all the input - feeling better about our plan to not do it every year.
