To put some input,storm,flair,bounder would be tier 3(entry level)bounder classic and Southwind would be 2,and the pace arrows would be 1s,I personally will be looking for a class A soon,99 to about 2008,most likely a Tiffin or Newmar, I feel the build quality is much better than the **** they build now.

For a 20 year old MH IMHO I would look at the interior and external condition, then does it have the items I want that are most important to your wife. Then I would ask to see service records. Check recalls by VIN . Then if I am still interested I strongly urge you to have the engine and transmission inspection by a trusted dealer even if cost me a couple 100 bucks! Where if fits in the manufactures line up is immaterial at this age!

Yeah, I know how to evaluate a specific unit to determine if it is worth buying. I just want to gauge build and component quality as my first filter to get me to the units I want to spend money to have them inspected.

I'm leaning toward Pace Arrow, Southwind, or Damon Intruder.

Problem is each manuf builds different tiers on each model. My Georgetown XL is considered a tier 3, but the standard Georgetown is tier 2.

Basically in the years your looking at, anything with full size storage doors and 22.5” wheels should be at least a tier 3.

To answer example question. 1. Pace Arrow 2 Southwind 3. Bounder & Bounder Classic 4. Flair. But understand all of these were built at the same plant. Discovery is a diesel and the others are gas engines.
As far as manufactures build quality do a search on this website that has been discussed a lot.

I know what you are trying to get at, but as others said, brand and tier won't mean anything on a 20 year old MH. They are all built pretty much the same way with the same components. The exception would be Bluebird, Prevost, Foretravel, Newell etc. But production MH's, won't matter. Sure some may have different bits or a bit better quality when it was built, but after 20 years, none of that matters. Every high level "tier" rolled off the same assembly line as their lowest end offering. Same people building them, same materials, same method. Flashy bits and paint seem to be the main difference in Tiers. Pick a floorplan you like with the things you want in it, find those models and look for one that was well maintained.

I've spent the last two years looking for an early 2000s coach. My top priorities were build quality and condition, without much regard to price (though all of these end up being far, far less than a newer coach, one of the reasons we decided on this era). Gas coaches were never in consideration. We looked at and turned down a lot of coaches. My short list near the end was (roughly in order of preference):

1) Foretravel U320 and U295
2) Country Coach Affinity and Magna (and to a lesser extent, Allure and Intrigue)
3) Beaver Marquis (and to a lesser extent, Patriot)
4) Monaco Signature, Executive, and Dynasty (or Holiday Rambler Navigator)
5) American Eagle, American Dream, and American Tradition (Fleetwood's top coaches)
6) Prevost, Wanderlodge, Newell, Alpine, and a couple others depending on the specific coach

Individual lines above, are sorted by tier (or at least, I'm relatively sure they are - if memory serves correct).

I ended up with a 2000 Country Coach Magna and have no regrets.

The old Fleetwood gas line up, before REV Group, was of decent value. The whole line is of the same construction materials. Some just trimmed out better. The build quality is just as good as the other brands. Just less fluff and not near the prestige and maintenance costs as the high $$ coaches.
The Workhorse W chassis ("I" beam front suspension) is good stuff. 8.1 engine with Allison tranny. Stay away from the Workhorse P chassis (Independent front suspension). It has too many issues.
The Ford F53 V10 chassis is good with some spark plug issues. Cure to the spark problem has been found. 1999 275 HP, 2000-2006 305 HP.
I can't speak for the other manufactures, seeing as how I'm driving a 27 year old Bounder. GRIN

I like n0arp's list, it was mine also. Those manufacturers were high end at the time and it shows in their longevity and quality. I also wanted a Gillig chassis, it was used by most of those manufacturers as an option. It means your choices need to be a little older than 2000, but it's worth the search.

Alternatively, if you were looking to dock your rig instead of rating it, it would be a question of piers over tiers.
