MNRon wrote: When I started driving in the '70's flat tires and blow-outs weren't uncommon. I can't remember how many tires I changed in parking lots or by the side of the road, but it was more than a couple. In particular I recall a blow-out in some miserable weather in MN, fortunately it was a rear tire.
Since radials took over in the 1990's I haven't had any blow-outs and now my tires just fail when I pick up a nail or screw it seems.
This thread is NOT intended to discuss trailer tires, nor the ST vs LT debate on them, but I'm curious of forum members experience on tow vehicle LT tires. Has anyone had a blow-out on LT tires in the last 10-20yrs? Even if overloaded?
Thanks

No blowouts. Limiting tire experience to just LT tires, I have had one flat. In that case it was the valve stem that failed, presumably due to age. The tires were 14, yes 14, years old at the time, and the valve stem was an incorrect rubber valve stem that was rotten. When I got home from that trip, the truck got six new tires and valve stems.
Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

I had a Michelin LT235/85 R blow out with no warning in 1998. It was 7 years old at the time and I noticed that several others on the truck were developing blisters on the inner sidewalls. Looking at the tread and outsides the tires still appeared to be in great shape. I have wondered if engine heat made the insides of the tires run hotter and that lead to the blisters.
Around 2007 a friend convinced me that Kumho tires were good deals and I put them on several vehicles. I had two blowouts with LT 265/85 R tires on the pickup, and a tread separation on a LT225/75 R on a van. I had a very strange problem on a P series Kumho where the wire belting started coming out the side of the tire. I haven't run any more Kumho tires since then.
