Apparently the folks who jumped on the full time bandwagon, van dwelling as well as schoolie conversions are getting squeezed. vanlife
I haven't really looked at any of the videos recently, this article came up on my google feed, but thought it was interesting.
Fuel cost and inflation are apparently parking some for weeks at a time.

Maybe deceiving driving a motorhome to a destination even 3 hours away, staying there, driving around a tow vehicle or biking not using as much gas as you may think. Sure newbies or those not fit for RVing will quit, those with 20+ years rving have seen this movie before. Only issue will be availability. Drill baby drill.

Looks like newbies seeing and experiencing their 1st gas spike.
While no fun, it won't be the first or last time fuel prices/increase spike dramatically.
For those choosing not to live on the road. The same can be said for mortgage rates.

Youtubers have a conflict.
- Hard to put out lots of content that will get lots of clicks, if they move 100miles and then sit for 2-4 weeks. Also, for living in a van, sitting stationary for weeks gets old quick.
- You get more clicks doing 500miles per week putting out 3-4 videos on different locations but you burn a lot of fuel.
I think a lot of them jumped on a couple years back when gas was below $2/gal and other modes of travel were very restricted (a few of the general travel channels we watch, did the vanlife shift when covid hit). Now with other modes of travel opening up and gas prices up, we are seeing a shift away.
With longer term stays and with fewer miles, it really starts to favor bigger traditional RVs as you get better living space for those longer stays and with fewer miles, the MPG while moving the RV becomes less critical.

“Squeezed?” LOL
Is there actually sympathy for those who aren’t really working for a living and think it’s a career being on perpetual vacation living as 21st century hippies, suckering a few bucks out of people who spend hours watching someone live in a van and go mountain biking and stuff?
This isn’t sad, it’s poetic justice. I’d like to do nothing but travel around and go camping 24/7 but I have a job which provides money for me and my family, responsibly.
Personally I think it’s hilarious

Whoever made this statement, in the article, "Camper vans, which range in cost from $100,000 to $200,000 before customization, have the best gas mileage, getting between 20 and 30 miles per gallon", is so off base.

More succintly, Whoever is reading stuff from these off the wall, little "news" sites has too much time on their hands....
Just shows the gullible nature and lack of intelligence out there.

I spent a lot of my free time during the 70s & 80s going to see The Dead, and those were legit hippies. This couple are just slackers, but not real hippies.
(And "free time" means between semesters and when I could get the time off work, not touring around on handouts like the true Deadheads. I was just a weekend warrior.)
And I think it's hilarious too. No sympathy from me.

I also think a lot of people really believed the stimulus money would keep coming, at least for four years, and they would be able to continue their lifestyle.

Yep - RVs were new and novel to people who didn't feel safe from COVID in hotels, bed & breakfasts, etc. - So there was fresh interest in them.
A lot of the folks doing these videos didn't look like the typical full-timer, so it was pretty obvious that any real interest they had in full-timing was going to be short-lived.
Result: They moved on to something else as soon as those clicks started dropping off ("We're selling our Airstream!").
