We have an old Tom cat that stays outside. I feed him on the back deck, and I noticed that the food bowl had started to move around, and I figured it was a raccoon or a possum. I have a live trap, so I baited it up and waited. I have a motion light shining on the bowl, first night, it came on and I watched through the blind. The coon went halfway in the trap and backed out a couple of times, then walked around the back of the trap and stuck his hands through the one-inch squares of the cage. I had to find a different plan.....
I had some heavy gauge plastic sheeting, so I wrapped, and duct taped all the seams. Next morning, I had a juvenile coon in the trap, after I stepped out on the deck, I saw another coon run under a storage building. Well, the fight is on, I know there is at least two more to catch. I will let you know the final tally. BTW, I have permission to release the animals on a WMA area not far from house, so no wildlife is harmed....

I have a old (10 years) Havahart metal box trap with doors at both ends. Its 12" X 12" x 36" long and big enough for 'dillos and coons. I've been looking for a new one. 'dillos bend it up up and I rebuild it but after dozens of rebuilds its on its last leg.
Coons love black oil sunflower seeds. I close one door and a handful of seeds under it....scatter a tea spoon by the open door. Works every nite the rascals come around looking for something to tear up or eat. I usually haul them on farther down my county road (10-12 miles) and release them far from houses/barns.
Out here where people feed their stock (ie; calf feeders) or grow farm crops they are a pest....along side of feral hogs and deer.

So you caught the 2 kid raccoons and released them miles away. When you catch mommy and release her,those kids are going to have some explaining to do to mommy. I live in northern CA and have had racoon and skunks invade our yard many times. I contacted a pest control company to trap and relocate these critters and was told that they legally could not release wild animals off my property and would have to euthanize them! I then called the county animal control and was told the same thing. I explained I didn't want to kill them, just get them out of my yard and was told that was the law. I couldn't go along with that so bought a trap and relocated several racoons to a creek a few miles out to town. The skunks however was a different matter. I didn't attempt to capture them and eventually they went away on their own after I blocked all the entrances to under my redwood decks and house foundation.

Well, it is Sunday morning, July 10th, I think I have the momma in the trap. So, it's now:
ME - 3
Raccoon - 1
I will continue setting trap until I am convinced all raccoons are re-homes....

Well, add another critter to the mix!!! I set the trap again after the third racoon, just to make sure another young coon was not missed. This morning I checked the trap, and the door was snapped shut. I figured another cat had walked in. Looked in the back of the trap and saw a juvenile possum in the cage. So now I guess I am trapping possums now.. Possum young, like coons usually travel with the momma until she runs them off. I will keep baiting the trap until I am satisfied they are gone.

I have what I think is the most politically correct Jack (Parson) Russel terrier (terrorist?) in the Western Hemisphere. He understands the SWMBO concept.
I had a similar issue, bait gone, trap empty, sometimes still open, sometimes tripped.
Then one night I spotted the tubby old culprit in the act. I took him out the side door, around the corner, and pointed him at it and gave him his marching orders, “Get him, be NICE!”.
At a flat out wind sprint he head-butted the culprit in the butt so hard that he looked like an Olympic gymnast in the finals.
That was the last time that Rocky visited our place.
