Let me start by saying, I don't dislike dogs per se, but I can't stand it when they bark incessantly when I'm trying to sleep. I'm staying at an extended stay hotel, due to necessity, and residents are allowed to bring their pets (usually dogs) for a separate fee; virtually all hotels and motels now allow pets, whereas that wasn't the case a few years back.

Tonight, I needed to complain to the person in charge on the night shift because of a loudly barking dog just a few doors away from mine. I learned that another resident on the floor below mine also complained; the animal was that loud.

So, the night manager tried several times to reach the owner, who wasn't in the room, on his cell phone. No answer. The next step would be contacting animal control. Now, the dog has stopped barking, so evidently the owner has returned. Perhaps I can get to sleep now! [emoticon]

When I was full time RVing, I can remember only one time I had a noisy dog situation. I certainly wish I could return to that beautiful lifestyle, but a physical handicap prevents me from doing so at this time. [emoticon]

One thing you can do in most campgrounds to "Control" outside noise. May not work that well with barking dogs but it will help. Run Air Conditioner on HIGH even if it's cool enough Just run it in FAN mode on HIGH.

The "White noise" of the rushing air will drown a lot of outside noise.

Something like what the OP described is what I call "stupid owner tricks". Think of it from the dog's standpoint - they are in a strange place, their owner has probably "left them behind" and they need to get help fast. So they bark.

My dogs are not barkers - but I can guarantee if we dumped them in a hotel room and then left - they would definitely bark. It's why Ed and I "tag team" the breakfast buffet: one stays with the dogs while the other eats; and vice-versa.

Sorry the OP had a nitwit for a neighbor.

I pretty much do the same thing. I run a box fan not far from my bed. I only set it on a fairly low speed, otherwise the fan itself becomes a noise maker. It helps somewhat, but there are sounds (often human caused) that just can’t be drowned out. [emoticon]

A few years ago at another long term hotel in Tucson, my neighbor owned what appeared to be a husky. All day long, while its owner was away, the animal would howl pitifully. At least, when he returned in the evening the dog would quiet down. Anyhow, the constant daily howling was annoying enough. Maybe that’s why I’m fond of cats. [emoticon]

When we are traveling we always seek out motels that are "pet free".
There are still lots of them - Problem solved and no doggy smell too

I agree. Most people don't realize that their dogs go crazy as soon as you leave the camper! And they know the sound of your vehicle and stop when you return. Our dogs do not go camping with us for this reason. If the dogs go crazy when the owners are gone, we politely let them know when they return so that they are aware and can rectify the issue. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but not the ones that go crazy while along while camping.

We have been a camping and some neighbors a few campers down had tow germman shepards. I was waiting on the camper to roll away because those dogs were running back and forth so much inside the camper. An hour or so later, the door flew open and out came a dog. I threw a piece of ham in the door the dog went in and i shut the door behind it. When they returned, I told them. Evidently one of the two broke out of the cage and went crazy inside and destroyed their couch and screen door.

Same here, I refuse to stay in a hotel that allows pets.

I like Dogs but they need ROOM and there is not a lot of that in an RV.> Cats are also nice. Had cats for many years and though they did not like the move from bricks and sticks to wheels and 8.1L vortec houses. they were very content once IN either house. They do not need the room a dog. Especially a Huskey needs.

Once had a huskey/malmute cross next door while camping (CG requires a million dollar liability policy if you have such a canine) His name was Rowdy.. Was he dangerous... Basically he was a great big ***** cat.. I was petting him and stopped.. And just like Amber (Who was a genuine ***** cat) he reached out and pulled my hand back so I could pet him more. The difference.. Well amber had standard size cat paws.
His paws were bigger than my xxL hands.

There are far fewer places that don’t allow pets than those that do. At least, that’s what I’ve found. Eventually, it may be impossible to find a hotel at your preferred location, which may necessitate a change of plans. Hotel/motels attract more customers by allowing them to take their pets, not to mention they don’t mind charging the extra fee.

OP here. It's now about a month later. I'm in the same room, just across the hall from Fido. In the same room as last time is that incessantly barking dog. It's not quite 5 PM, and noise curfew is 10 PM (it's still annoying to hear that ruckus, even during the day). Ironically, one of the assistant managers is going to be overnighting in the room right next that dog. If the owner isn't back by then, the assistant mgr is going to get a taste of the misery dogs can cause.

It's a shame when these business promise to provide a peaceful environment to their customers and then turn the premises into a dog kennel. It's all about $$, unfortunately. The only remedy is a return to full time RVing, which my current handicap is preventing. On a positive note, the room I'm renting is perfectly set up for a handicapped person. Unfortunately, there's no escaping noise in an apartment setting. Maybe I can rent a cage at the local animal shelter. At least the rent would be far less! (:
