Nice apocryphal story and it might have even happened one time. But it's not a good long term plan.

I experienced nearly the same at an Audi dealership, except NO salesman ever even approached me. I don't buy cars 2 at a time, but I do pay cash.

Not sure. At the beginning of last year I went to the local BMW dealership because I wanted to buy 2 BMW I3. I had the money, already had buyers for my cars, just wanted to replace them with what I considered the best electric car ever made. I went with my son, and as I am trying to teach my son Spanish and Italian, we were not speaking english (my son is 24, not a kid). The sales guys saw us and send us the rookie. When I said we wanted 2 cars two older sales guys laughed in the background. We were not dressed as BMW owners I gess. I ended buying them online from a dealer in Georgia. Did everything over the phone, the cars showed p in my house the next day. I do take them to service to that dealership to service, and I did tell the story to the sales manager. He was not too happy to say the least, because they still had the I3s and they had to reduce the price as they could not sell them.

What a shame that some CW's have a horrible attitude. We have had two great experiences at our local one, five years apart. Much better experiences than we had buying our sailboat. Had the same experience as others where we were not "dressed the part". Knew what we wanted and were ready to write a check but nobody would come near us. Three dealers hundreds of miles apart and nobody would even greet us. Ended up traveling up north to dreaded Long Island where another dealer of that line was. Again, nobody to even greet us.
We had a "private" conversation in front of the owners office wondering why they did not want a 90k sale. We were just about back to the car when two salesmen came running out practically tripping over each other. They wanted to know if they could help. We told them the time for that had passed and we were going back home with a stop in Annapolis. Case closed for them.
Got to Annapolis and has on a cap from the last Americas Cup race and they were all over us. Got the 90k boat for 78k. All it took was a $15 cap. Who knew?

Odd that at the beginning of last year when there was big shortages of new cars and used car prices were thru the roof...the dealer was desperate to unload the large stockpile he was holding...hmmm.
Even if your story is true, it's far from typical and targeting scruffy tire kickers expecting them to buy multiple cars cash is a great way to go broke.

I simply don't understand why potential "customers" put up with poor service, or, even question it. It's nothing personal. Just move on. IMO, there are plenty of high quality people who would love to have your business. In this business environment, they simply can't afford to find you. (the sales commissions are too low) YOU HAVE TO FIND THEM! When you do, . . . . . the deal you get will be worth it.

Even if it was true? Far from typical? Great way to go broke? Well, I am not broke, the BMW I3s we drive every day are paying for themselfs, and at the time, they we not typical. If you don't want to believe it is up to you. By the way, I always buy similar cars, it helps on having the parts and the knowledge to fix them.
Here is another one for you not to believe (and the reason why we bought them): I have driven mine over 1000 miles without recharging the battery on a single trip...

Seems salesmen have certain things they look for as people come in. Short version from a few years back. Had the work beater car and stopped to look at a truck. Mind you I have long hair and a beard. Most salesmen acted busy (bs'ng) so this newer one came out. Less than a month in sales. Talked about 1/2 hour on price, ect. Said I'd be back later with the $$. Few hours later pulled in on the Harley, and the building emptied out trying to get to me. Was nice to walk over to the new salesman and get my truck.
