Good afternoon,
I’m in the process of bringing up my 2002 Four Winds to a more respectable state and I’ve moved onto decals.
I’ve been able to remove the decals that I want to replace but I’ve come up with a new problem. The fiberglass underneath the old decals looks like new and you’ll be able to see it around the new decals because the new decals aren’t an exact match. They are close but not perfect.
Any suggestions as to what I need to do to try to make it not so obvious? I get the feeling I’m going to end up polishing the entire RV with a compound then a regular fiberglass polish to try to make the gelcoat look brand new. I’m not new to working with fiberglass. I did a boat two years ago and had to bring up the gelcoat from very bad chalky state. I ended up using 1000 grit, 1500 grit and then 2000 grit (wet sanding) followed by compound and polish. The boat looks brand new.
I think I just talked myself into a job.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Used. But I do these things. I buy older stuff and restore it to the best of my ability. And we go on trips with it too.
I’ve done this to:
1973 Porsche
1996 Baja powerboat
2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500
1964 Magnavox console stereo
1976 Marantz 1060 stereo amplifier
The list goes on. Then I use the stuff and enjoy it.

The only problem with replacing decals, is that down the road the new ones will fade and crack and you'll have to do it all over again. And the gelcoat will dull and chalk all over again. Painting the RV is a much better solution. I know that's what I would do.

We removed our decals and had the trailer polished. Even after the polish you could still see the location of the old decals. We never installed new decals and we are happy with our white ghost trailer.

I would do a body paint not decals again.
Being that the decals are removed already, you have reduced the labor for a body shop to paint it.
You could ask a shop what more you can do before they paint it.

If the new decals are close like you said, it’ll look just fine. Your eyes will not be drawn to the ghost stripes.
Paint? Lol. Guy already has the new decals…
PS paint fades too if not cared for.

Thanks! You are right. We hardly notice the ghosting. I’m waiting for the model decals to come in. It’s a beaut!! We have fun camping in her but I also have fun working on her too. Making her look neat and tidy is satisfying.

I solved the problem. Contacted a sign painter who free style painted . following lines left by removal, repainted all in the colors of old decals $200.00.
Best investment to spruce up my older class C
