Thanks all...great feedback. I guess I haven't been on here for a while...I am actually in Iowa now and have a new truck and 5th wheel myself...guess I have to update my signature info.

I was talking to a neighbor last week while he was showing me his new Chevrolet 1500 4X4 Crew Cab. While he was talking I opened the door and looked at the payload label in the door jamb. Max combined passengers and cargo was only 874 pounds!!!! In other words if you took 4 or 5 heavy adults with you there would be no capacity for ANYTHING ELSE!! I was totally shocked at how little it could carry. To make him feel better I remarked that it probably had a good soft ride. But essentially worthless as a "truck" I thought to myself.

Now you know the weight cops won't give you a answer to your hitch question.
Pullrite at one time made Superglide for Fords 5' 5" bed. I saw a used one at my rv dealer a couple years back. Service mgr says a customer was using it and was selling it due to the back of the older model trailer pin box that was contacting the sides of the bed.
I see Pullrites web shows several models of Superglide for Fords 5' X" beds. superglide clicky

I had an '04 F150 with all the towing options and pulled an 8,000lb Cougar FW. Pull-Rite made an excellent auto slider for that particular short-bed truck. Never had any issues towing on I95, mostly VA to FL. We never made any trips in the mountains so I can't say it would have been okay there.

Of course they do! Dealer wants to make a sale. He won't be fine with 95% of all 5ers. TOO much pin weight. One can modify their truck (even those of us who are not automotive engineers) but one can't increase the manufacturer's max weight. Agree. When we first got our FW, we had an F250, dealer said the same. We thought the same and put in airbags to help. First trip, air bag line blew On the side of the road repair. Second trip, air lines blew again, twice, on the side of the road repair. A year later we traded in and bought our current TV. Never looked back.

Yep for every weight police comment, there is some guy saying a 1980's vintage Ford Ranger can handle that 40ft 5er. Just slap some airbags on it.

Since the OP is talking about buying a new rig, it simply makes sense to make sure what you select matches between truck & trailer.

Pullrite has been working great for me now 17 years and 10s of thousands of miles. Been over the highest mountains, through the hottest deserts, ice and snow. No issues.

The only thing that matters here is if the trailer is within the vehicles payload numbers. Upgrading tires, suspension, adding air bags, just makes towing within the vehicles payload more comfortable and safer. So, can an 1/2 ton pull a 5th wheel, the answer is yes. But, that 5th wheel must be within the weights the 1/2 ton can handle. I was looking to buy a 1/2 ton to tow a gooseneck trailer with a 1200 lb hitch weight. So, they are out there and 5th wheels are out there. But, just because it says 1/2 ton towable, doesn't mean it is. Look at the trucks payload. Also, does anyone make a hitch for that particular model? I think the 5.5' bed limits your options very fast. The 6.5' bed has more options. If he was buying a truck, best to buy something you can upgrade trailers later. 3/4 or 1 ton is a better choice if you plan to tow for many years. I'm at a park today and there is a public RV dump at the end of the row. All the RV's driving to the dump, I have seen multiple trucks with overweight trailers, or at least rear bumpers that are low to the ground and headlights pointing to the sky. Either their weight distribution hitches are incorrectly installed or they are overweight, or both...

I have one simple statement....DO NOT do it.

One issue is the short bed, and the biggest issue will be the pin weight. A 5er will have a pin weight that will be around 20% of the trailer GVWWR. So, a 10,000LB 5er will have a loaded pin weight of 2000 LB. Add in the passengers, the hitch and cargo in the bed, you will be over the truck's payload capacity or cargo capacity.
