I have not needed to rent a vehicle in I can't remember when... I am planning a short trip in September for a family reunion in the west-central part of Iowa. I will fly into Omaha and planned on renting a car for a 70 mile trip, spend over night and return to Omaha for a return flight out. I checked all of the sites on-line and got all kinds of wild prices, all ranging from $200 to $400 dollars. I called several of the rental companies located at the airport directly and finally reserved with Hertz for $170.00 for the two day rental. What has happened to the Rental market? No more $19.95 a day get-a-way prices....

During the pandemic they sold off most of the rental fleets. And with car prices over MSRP now they are not doing the major fleet buying like they did years ago.
Have seen where people are renting U-Hauls instead of cars. Have you checked on a U-Haul van or pickup truck?

Jetboater, I did not, same reason I did not go with Enterprise either, I wanted to pick up and drop off at airport for convenience. I hate running half way across town to pick up and drop off vehicle and then need a ride to and from airport. I am an old man and don't like hassles.....

And as you found out, lack of hassles comes at a price...

Things have settled down some. A year ago a relative flew to Cda ID to visit family. When he checked on renting a car for a couple weeks, he was told $6000-$8000 if there would be one available. Fortunately he was able to borrow a rig for his stay.

Several of our visiting kids, who needed rental cars while in Florida, rented from "Turo". It's sort of the "AirBNB" of rental cars - you are actually renting someone's personally-owned car to use. One son rented a Tesla; another with 4 kids rented a Jeep Wagoneer (that one cost him $100/day, but it was a gorgeous, HUGE SUV with every luxury you could think of). It seems there was an option of an airport pickup/dropoff; or the Jeep got dropped at the owner's home about 2 miles from our place! Another family rented a Mustang Convertible for $60/day

My parents used to live in Mystic CT - half way between Hartford and Providence. I used to fly into Hartford most times, but I had a hard time getting a seat to Hartford once. I booked a seat to Providence...
I went to pick up a rental car and realized I should have waited the day for the flight to Hartford.
