Next month we are heading to Myrtle Beach, from Melbourne Florida. I don't expect any problems on 1-95, other than the usual traffic, but I am wondering about HWY 17. Anyone have any input on construction on that route?

We travel 17 quite a bit. No current issues on it that I am aware of. We use it to go down to Charleston and even when there is construction it does not really affect traffic. Traffic itself could be an issue once you get to Murrells Inlet. Peak traffic is Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. We(locals) avoid the area during those times. Come on a weekday and leave on a weekday will make the trip the easiest. Avoid lunchtime on any day. Enjoy your stay!

Friends who live in Myrtle say there is no construction to speak of much on 17. If it were me....stay on 95 to Turbeville (378) go into Conway and then on to Myrtle on 501....THEN go exploring after you've settled in on your site. Were are heading there the first week of October for the Little River Shrimp Fest. Looking forward to it. We are staying in Briarcliffe Resort by Barefoot Landing.

If you are staying on the south end (Ocean Lakes, Lakewood, Pirateland) then staying on 17 will be your best bet, but do try to avoid weekends. If staying on the north end (Apache, Myrtle Beach Travel Park, Briarcliff) then follow 17 to 707 to 31 to 22. 31 will bypass all the rest of MB and 22 will drop you right into the road to MBTP and Apache and Briarcliff will be just up 17 on the left.

Jams can happen almost instantly on I-95 from just south of Savannah to north a couple of miles above the river and SC line. No idea why it happens but many times I headed into Hilton Head from 16 it was go slow for a while

I am very familiar with the Myrtle Beach area, although it has seen massive growth over the past few years. My wife and I volunteered at Huntington Beach tayte ark for five years after I retired. Loved the area and especially the seafood restaurants. Really, that is the main reason we are going there this next month! We will be staying at Pirateland, as we like the south end of the strip and are most familiar with it.
The last time we drove up 17, there was a lot of construction south of Charleston. I think it was a major paving project. Yes, 95 can be a nightmare in places.

Thanks for your info,
