I see it as simple supply and demand. If someone will pay the price, so be it. Because of supply issues, dealers are selling less total units, so need to make more on the ones they do sell. That's why they are paying so much for used, to have something to sell. I have talked to 2 different fellows who were shopping, and found dealers with comparable used units priced more than new. The salesman told them that the new one would sell and then the used one would move.

So I had to stop by my usual dealership yesterday to get the wife's Taurus state inspection. While there, I talked with the sales manager.

He showed me the window sticker of a Limited that was enroute. Of course, it had everything except the massaging seats. The massaging seats are deleted due to parts or chips or something.

Anyway, the window sticker was just over $99,000. He said they'd sell it to me for the window sticker plus their tax, tags, doc fee, etc.

I was seriously contemplating but I've decided to pass for now. A Limited is far more than I desire, not to mention around $104,000 out the door.

So for now, the search continues. But at least Fall is coming and things may get a little better. I'm in no super hurry.

I'll second the suggestion that if you aren't in a hurry just order what you want. You'll get it for MSRP and the inflated value of your current vehicle, sell or trade, may put you in the ballpark of a pre-COVID transaction.

The dealers I have talked to, about 10, are still trying hard to lowball trades. Also none will guarantee a date when an ordered vehicle will arrive nor guarantee the final price/deal/trade value when it does arrive. It's a crapshoot. How could they?, the market could be completely different months or a year from now, and they're not going to lose a dime on a deal.

I know two people who ordered and when the vehicles arrived the dealer tacked on $5K as a take it or leave it market adjustment, happily refunding the hand money they laid down to order. They did not lose any money but lost a lot of time for nothing. Pick the dealer carefully. You can get it all in writing but read the fine print, they'll have it covered so they can do what they wish.

For sure. Lots of unscrupulous businesses out there now. 1000% more than pre Covid.
Well maybe not unscrupulous per se, I’m just getting weary of the newfound lack of integrity of subcontractors and suppliers since Covid, that I never experienced in the previous 20+ years. It’s costing me ( well, the company I work for and my investment in them) millions, just on the work I’m responsible for…over the course of 21-22 years, we estimate our unrecoverable losses from inflation/escalation IE the costs we can’t pass along to the clients to be well over $200 million or about. 6% hit to the bottom line. And the only reason it’s not worse is a good portion of our work is private party not public works.

Oh and you’re also right, it’s a rare day that one couldn’t do better financially by keeping as much of the total transaction of upgrading to a brand new vehicle out of the dealers hands….by not trading in.

I stopped by another Ford dealer today on the other side of town. They had a new F350 DRW Lariat but I assume that was somebody else's as it had no window sticker or anything. You could tell it was new but it was not in the area with the other Super Duties.

A salesman was riding around in his little golf cart so I asked him about their situation on F450s. He said they get very few and it's just luck on getting one. He said they were taking orders right now for 2023s and they estimate 8 months and they were pretty consistent on MSRP. No mark-up but no haggling either.

I think I may go back to the dealer from yesterday and seriously discuss ordering me either an XL STX or a Lariat.

Good Luck. In 8 months the way they keep raising interest rates, and with prices for basically everything going through the roof, you just might be in a better buying position. I expect new vehicle sales to tank at some point.

The order window for Ford does not open until somewhere around October 17th for the 2023 Super Dutys. Unless the F450 falls under something different he is lying to you.

A sales guy at a dealer lying? That really happens? Cmon man lol.

Technically the dealer would just like to get his deposit which would constitute "ordering" from the dealer, just not the actual order being placed with Ford lol.

As I stated, it was just a salesman in his golf cart. I took what he told me with a grain of salt.

I will go to the first dealership I spoke with. They are the ones I've always had service work done with. That sales manager should be able to sit down with me and we can discuss realistic choices.
