One more thing that auto buyers will pay for that they don't want or need. A test app to reveal an impared driver will become required, and those that are not affected by it will have to pay for it anyway. And, I also agree, those affected will find a way to defeat it anyway. Those that are not affected will pay for it and never use it.
Too many combinations now on trucks that only make sense to some drivers but not others. If you want one thing, you need to buy the 'package' with other things in it you don't want or use. Not only does that raise the initial cost, it raises the tax and fees also in many states.
It's no wonder folks launch an LLC in the states that offer it before buying a new vehicle. What once was nickels and dimes became quarters and dollars to the buyers.

A pickup truck with 8 people in it? Perhaps the problem here is operator error? I'm not up on all aspects of pick-up trucks, but I thought their maximum capacity is either 5 or 6, depending upon the front seat. How do you get 7 passengers, and several of those were most likely supposed to be in booster seats at the younger end of the age range. Nowhere in the NTSA article is it mentioned that the pickup truck was overloaded and that the operator/driver of the pickup was negligent in ways, as well.
On a related link was this: "Although the postcrash toxicology tests that were conducted at the request of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) detected evidence of cannabis use, the NTSB was unable to determine whether the effects of cannabis use contributed to the driver’s impairment." So...drunk AND high! The driver was a moron!
Plus, excessive speed was the real cause of this accident, and that could've happened with a perfectly sober, albeit stupid, driver. Geeze!
As someone else pointed out, we need an "idiot detector" before these foolish things are added to our vehicles. It's bad enough that now when we get new tires, we have to have the air pressure sensors checked/replaced or new batteries added. All an additional expense. And for what? Because a certain segment of society chose to drive their high center-of-gravity SUVs and not check their tire pressure regularly. THEIR FAULT, not ours. Yet we ALL pay for it now.

Actually I think this is because of pressure from the insurance industry. They hate paying out claims.

oh I agree.. As I said I've tapped a few kegs for parties.

Fwiw in Japan all big trucks have breathalizer inside and driver has to be sober before the engine starts.
Not sure of the cost,but what is the price of life?
Cell phones use while driving is just as bad as here,almost every driver uses it,some even have TV on dash.
Some drivers even let their kids stand on seats unbuckled.

Ladies drag their children along. They'll stop in the middle of this aisle. And in total oblivion relate their day's activities moment by moment. And yes it happens south of the border too. I ride with a friend to shop. I see him become unaware of green traffic lights.
I disliked the taste of American brew and settled on a Yucatecan beer by the name of León Negro. It's unavailable here, so that settles that.
Every one of my same age school buddies drank. They are long dead.

Like all other things it's all about the money. Try as they might the IRS can not figure out how to tax dead people. It's a battle between them and the alcohol and drug sellers.
