Brylcreem a "little dab will do ya." I also used Vitalis and Pomade back in the 50's. My hair is thinning also but what works for me now is either hair gel applied when damp, it can't be wet or any hair spray damp to dry. Then after it dries and a little stiff, brush it out and the product will give your hair a little more volume and will stay in place. Much better than the aforementioned greasy products. The thinner your hair is the shorter it needs to be cut.
