not very computer savoy but need to buy a external hard drive to back up my computer so that they can reinstall my operating system.... have only about 3000 pictures and my bookmarks... any suggestion as to what inexpensive brand or model to get to do this???

western digital drives are very reliable. i’ve been using them for years with no failures. their passport models are small and connect via USB cable.

but if all you want to do is copy 3000-photos i’d be looking at a USB thumb drive. just determine the needed capacity ans buy one a bit larger. purely a guess but a 100-gb thumb drive is likely more than you’ll need.

I've been buying Samsung SSD for years -- SSD w/USB cable. Never had a problem. I've got three SSD 2T backups. Not the least expensive OTM, but worth the money if you continue to shoot photos and want to save all.

I agree with rk911 that Western Digital is a good product as well.

Joelyn,

I suggest that you look at, or at least estimate the amount of storage you need. There are, as been said above, some differing possibilities. These all have variations in convenience, reliability and cost.

One and two terabyte drives either mechanical or solid state are very available.

Mechanical drives are still a cost advantage, but they have parts and in hard work they have a limited life. They can also be damaged by mechanical shocks like being dropped.

Solid State drives have a slight cost penalty (today), but they don't have parts that wear out. They can be damage by electric surprises so care must be taken to prevent this from happening.

USB thumb drives have also been mentioned. When you come up with a requirement, this is something you should consider. The storage cost used to be high, but it has come down. They have an access speed disadvantage but very high durability. I believe the oldest I still have in service is over 20 years old and very small. In all that time, I have only had one actually fail. (I can't blame the one that the puppy chewed up.)

I hope this has been some help to you. I do suggest that you buy a name you recognize from a known supplier. There is some junk out there.

If you have a Costco nearby, they have a 1TB SSD for about $130. They also have mechanical HD for a little less, but twice the size or more. Given the reasonable cost now days, I'd go ahead and get something that I could also use as a back-up going forward (and do regular back-ups) Modern computers are very reliable, but they aren't indestructible.

thanks for all the answers and suggestions... i bought this one at walmart today for 49.00, the only one they had.... opened it and only problem is there are no instructions other than to plug the cord into computer... hopefully there will be more info once i plug it in and try it...... one other question, once i find out how to put the items on the ext drive, say like pictures, will my pictures no longer be on my computer or will they be on both devices?????

When you plug it in, it will show as a new drive on your content menu, with a new letter designation. -- D, or F, or E, etc.

You HIGHLIGHT and COPY, then PASTE into the new drive. IF you COPY AND PASTE, it leaves the original on your PC drive. If you CUT AND PASTE, then it removes the original image and paste it on the new drive.

YOU can copy and paste a folder at once. You don't have to copy and paste each image individually. Or you can create a new folder on the new drive, and copy and paste them into it. Makes sure you label each folder so you can know where the images you want later are located.

Sometimes, depending on your programs, CUT might delete it permanently. SO take care how you do it ... Know before you transfer files what happens after you paste it.

SO, remember, COPY leaves the orginal, CUT deletes it.

IF you accidently delete one you want, look in your trash or recycle folder before you empty it.

How big is the hard drive? These days you can get some very VERY large Thumb drives... Consider one of those.

UPDATE............. plugged in my ext drive and pretty easy to set up. downloaded all my pictures (which was the main thing) along with other documents etc that pretty much the computer decided what to save. so that is all backed up but just one question...
I don't see my BOOKMARKS saved or can't find them on the drive.... is there a way to download all my bookmarks onto the ext drive.... thanks
