it must be significant.

It's beefy, but not that heavy. If someone is that close on capacity, they have other issues. And towing anything probably shouldn't be on the menu.

Do you have a rear camper bumper?

From his receiver collar to edge of camper bumper is 29".

His steel rear camper bumper is 11" deep. If he didn't have the bumper, an 18" extension would work.

You missed the point. The extension does not have to go all the way to the rear edge of the bumper.

An 18" extension will put it 11" under the bumper. A standard shank will add a minimum of 6" to that and put the ball a mere 4" under the bumper of the camper.

I know, I'm probably beating my head against the wall on this, but I already have a headache so it's no big deal, LOL.

After some net searching, I estimate that for my application, the hitch itself would add about 30 pounds over the stock hitch. A 36" extension adds about 70 pounds. If towing a 3500 pound trailer, there should be about 350 pounds of tongue weight. All the above reduce the carrying capacity you can put in the bed (your camper). If you have a 4500 or 5500 series truck, it probably won't be a factor. If you have a 2500 or 3500 series truck, you should take notice..

My friends set up is very similar...he has a camper bumper that adds distance between hitch and rear edge of bumper.

I do understand about perhaps not needing a 36" extension. The boat coupler would be too close to bottom of camper bumper with less than 36". My friend does not want the ball connection under the camper bumper. Concern would be up driveways at angles that are steep could cause trailer coupler/tongue to hit camper bumper. Plus, the added length will assist when launching boat.

Grit dog.....I do read all that are assisting in productive manners.....not just what I want to hear!! Your responses are not always productive. All other responses are appreciated and have been productive.
