However, I checked those figures with eight stops at the pump (1400 miles in total), manually calculated the MPG and found there was good agreement between the two (within 1% on average).

So......eight stops at the pumps over 1,400 miles averages out to about 175 miles.....I’m so confused.

Here is a "maybe" as to why,

175 miles between stops when towing, could be explained as the driver needing a break, or having a small fuel tank and fueling up at half a tank just to be safe.

On my gasser, it has a drinking problem (7 - 8 mpg) with a small tank. I would not push 175 miles between fillups as a routine as I'm selective on which gas station I can fit in and get out of. With my mileage, I would start getting a low fuel warning at about 1/4" tank which is about 175 miles. I always want a reserve of fuel in case I get stuck out on the road or I can't fit in the nearest gas station, I can go to the next, etc. Between 100 - 125 miles (about a 1/2 tank mark) I'm stopping for a top-off on days when I tow over 200 miles in a day. We all camp and tow different, and all are OK.

The OP is getting a whole lot more miles per gallon than my gasser. Their MPG is not quite double mine, but close. I suspect their tolerance zone, is at the 175 area either for a truck reason or their need, or a pet's need, to get out and walk around.

Just a thought.

I can't seem to reply directly to gsbrockan's comments but I'll do it here where John Barca made his accurate and thoughtful assumption. I made eight stops for the exact reason he stated - taking a break from driving. The stops at the pump were NOT fill-ups, rather, they were only partials. I'm convinced the biggest variability was how consistently I topped off the tank. I took it right to the top until it was within a 1/2 inch of spilling out. Bottom line is - the DIC was as accurate as the manually calculated MPG.

Thanks for sharing. And not surprising. 50% fuel consumption increase giver take when towing a big sail has been the recipe forever. Nothing new.
Old Dmax and Cummins were in the 18/9 category around 70-75 mph (flat no wind). Newer Cummins is in the 14/7 range thanks to the lift, tires and too tall gears. Would be the same 18/9 if it was stock.
It does lend some credibility to those who claim 25mpg out of their big diesels. But what they forget to mention is they’re drivin miss daisy and p!ssing off the line of cars behind them who may actually have some where to be before their next birthday.

naa not driving miss daisy after I tuned my ford (emmisions on) I get 10.1 l/100km or 23.3 MPG US or 28 MPG CDN doing at 68 mph that 10kph over the speed limit here in BC and the speed limit in Alberta on that road. of course thats empty and using cruze control, I am looking forward to trying it out towing the 5th wheel and hauling the camper to see the difference there.

@Cummins12v98, do you really notice any difference in MPG towing tandem with that little trailer? I tow my 18’, around 3500 pound Ranger boat tandem fairly often, and I don’t notice any difference in MPG vs just one trailer.

18 Ford F350 diesel DRW 4:30 gear, 9 towing 66-70. 14 no trailer 72-75. If you are worried about fuel mileage, you need a different hobby.
