Anyone had an experience with Maaco? Are they any good at painting Vehicles? Supposed to be an economical way of getting a car repainted. Just wondering what the quality of work was.

About what you'd expect for the price. A friend of mine drove through a mud puddle in the driveway of the Maaco shop, and they painted right over the mud that splashed up on the fender well edge. Good paint takes a lot of hand work, hand work costs money, ergo cheap paint jobs reflect the price.

But should be good enough to cover the bondo until you sell it on to the next sucker, uh, customer.

That sounds like a terrible service.

Reminds me of the car painting place back in the late 60's. Earl Schieb,"we will paint any car,any color for $29.95".Joke was leave the windows down and we will paint the interior too. Good side to it though was most of the black window trim matched the car color.

Yeah, pretty much. But what can you expect when the price of quality paint, will generally run more than what Maaco wants for the whole darned job. [emoticon]

We only had one experience with Maaco, and it was over ten years ago. We had a vehicle we planned to allow our oldest son to use when he got his driver's license. It was getting up in years and had plenty of door dings and little scratches but was still very reliable. We didn't want to put a ton of money into a new paint job but we wanted the exterior spruced up a bit. So we took it to Maaco for re-painting. We can't complain one bit about what they did. We kept it for another six or seven years and the paint still looked fine.

Many years back a friend owned a body shop. Also did a lot of color change for re-sell of fleet vehicles. He would have his shop do all the prep work, and paint the jams. Just leave holes in paper over windows so could drive. Maaco could mask over the holes, have a couple inches to be sloppy with tape. He could pay them to shoot the paint, and dry cheaper than could tie up his booth.
When I was changing some tractors into trucks, I sent doors and hood loaded on a trailer, so could paint without unloading. We called it 30 MPH paint job; Looked pretty good rolling by, but if light turned red a body man could see problems before the green.

Keep in mind Maaco is a franchise. I was surprised by the wildly varying quality of work from different Maacos. Some owners are out to make a quick buck, some want to be proud of every job that leaves their shop.

I had an RV painted at Maaco over 20 years ago. But I did the prep work, I choose Maaco because the painter had over 30 years experience and was an artist with a spray gun. Doing a good job on a large vehicle is not a piece of cake!

You would think anyone doing the same job over and over would become pretty good, and in some cases that is true with Macco. You have to somewhat lower your standards with their quality of workmanship. Dry spray areas, runs or sags and too heavy or maybe too light of paint has to be expected and in many cases just lived with when you leave. Will your car look better, probably, will it look like it was new, probaby not. But for the amount they charge, you are getting the job that money will buy, not much more. I stopped into the quality local shop near me and asked about repainting one of my cars, its a convertible and the price was starting at 10 grand.
