No ... but ... you most certainly can be pulled over by the state officials if they observe what they feel is 'not good' ... and you will get the same inspection an over-the-road trucker gets ...

There is a truck weight station on IH10 as you enter New Mexico from the east. There are several signs listing who should enter. One thing listed is "all Towbars". Now I tow a car and have never stopped and do check for flashing lights behind me. There also is such a sign near Cortez Co at a weight station, I drove in and the attendant just smiled and waved.
'Spect the New Mexico folks just have odd signs!!

Very simple and very basic answer - NO, you are not a COMMERCIAL vehicle. That's what weight stations are for.
Never have, and probably, never will.
The only thing you have to watch out for, are things like I-287, West bound, after the Tapenzee Bridge in NY: ALL trucks over (?) weight, OR any vehicle towing any kind of "trailor" has to go thru the tollbooth.

Does anyone know about South Dakota? We've looked in the Woodall's book and it says any tow vehicle, trailor, or truck over eight thousand lbs has to stop. We are going through there later this month so any advice would be great. Thanks!

Ukon93, I pulled across I90 to the Black Hills and didn't stop at any and did not have any problems. The only place I have had to stop and get weighed was in Neberaska and I could not tell you the road I was on though. I do not think it applies to all roads in Neberaska or not.

Hubby drives a truck and the answer is "NO". Only commercial vehicles need to stop at weigh stations.
